The advantage to a mailing list is you can find and talk to like-minded people about a given subject no matter where the are located. The are also an excellent source of information. The drawback is a mailing list can deluge you with email. You may not have time to read it all.

Some mailing lists have a moderator or volunteer who screens the mail before it's posted to the list. These types of lists generate less email, which could be appealing. Other mailing lists are unmoderated.
